Power-boat racers should be honoured at year’s end

It grieves me to see how power-boat racers have been treated over the past years. In every other sport the best have been honoured at year’s end, but there is no mention of boat racers. These racers spend millions of dollars on new engines and new models of boats.

They put life and limb at risk to entertain spectators for the hosts of the sport. We have lost two great racers, Carl Holder and Ganesh Ramsingh a few years ago.

I am calling on the promoters and sponsors of this great sport and let us come together and pool a little of the profits from the Regatta or power-boat racing and sponsor at least four trophies – that won’t cost much. These should be:

(1)Champion Racer 2009

(2)Most improved racer 2009

(3)Most attractive boat and driver 2009

(4)Oldest Racer 2009

There should be a few medals for participants as well. Letters could be sent out to the relevant personnel to assist with the purchase of these trophies so that a presentation could be made some time in late December 2009.

This would be done by the Guyana Power Boat Racing Association members, who are all racers. This is to encourage them to come bigger and better in 2010. Note, this sport is in the Guyana calendar.

Yours faithfully,
Winston Miller (Snr)
