Republic evacuates after bomb scare

Operations at the Water Street branch of Republic Bank came to a halt yesterday morning after a bomb threat was made by an unknown caller.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene sometime after 11am, staff members and customers had already evacuated the building. The section of the street in front of the bank was cordoned off as members of the Guyana Fire Service and the Guyana Police Force commenced investigations. A fire tender was on stand-by and a sniffer dog was brought in.

Customers were very upset at what had happened and several said that it is unfortunate that such a prank could be pulled at such a busy time of the year.

They said that time was very important to them and a few had taken time off from work to transact their business at the bank, which has been filled with long lines in the last few weeks.
