Man on ‘pirating’ charges remanded

A man who is accused of robbing a fisherman of a boat engine, a wooden boat and several other items at gunpoint in February this year was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Rovin Robinson pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery under arms.

He denied that he along with others used a gun to rob Yaho Roberts of a 50 horsepower engine, a wooden boat, a quantity of foodstuff, five birds and their cages and a gold ring, totaling over $1.2M, on February 4 at Ikururuaa Lake, Canje Creek, Berbice.

Prosecutor Robert Clemment objected to Robinson’s bail application when he suggested it and requested that he be remanded to prison.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Robinson be remanded to prison and that the matter be transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court for May 4.

While being brought into the courtyard earlier yesterday morning, Robinson was heard shouting, “How could yall treat me suh, no ID parade, yall aint do so why yall bring me here.”

He continued his shouting about how unjustly he had been treated until he had to be taken back to the Brickdam Police Station.

He later returned to the court to answer to the charge.

Prosecutor Robert Clement stated that he was  not certain if Robinson was part of the group of men who had been involved in the latest string of robberies where several fishermen where held at gunpoint, some beaten and relieved of their boat engines, gasoline and several other items.

Another man, Vandel Daziel of 446 Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson in February charged with the same offence.

He was represented by attorney-at-law Rexford Jack who applied for bail for him on the grounds that the offence was a bailable one and that no weapon was found on his client.

Meanwhile, Prosecutor Denise Griffith stated that Daziel was caught with the stolen items by two witnesses who notified the police.

The magistrate, however, ordered that Daziel be remanded to prison.
