-suspect in custody

A Wismar man is nursing a gunshot wound to his buttocks following an altercation with a man who reportedly shot him after residents apprehended his friend who had stolen a gold chain from a woman.

The incident took place shortly after midnight on Thursday morning in the vicinity of Danjou Alley at Christianburg.

Relating the incident the victim Kerron Fiedtkou, 20 years old, of 27 Danjou Alley said that he was returning home after visiting his girlfriend when he noticed some of his relatives engaged in an argument with the suspect.

He said he got caught up in the altercation. According to Fiedtkou the man left the scene and returned with the handgun and shot him.

Fiedtkou was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex where he was treated for the gunshot wound and sent home.

Eyewitnesses told Stabroek News that the shooting incident came after a man accused of snatching a woman’s gold chain was apprehended.

They explained that after an alarm was raised a large number of residents came out to her rescue. They said that a number of persons circled the area and trapped the chain snatcher. The man was caught, beaten and then taken to the Wismar Police Station.

Witnesses said that the shooter who was a friend of the chain snatcher learnt of the incident and went to the scene. Following a heated argument he left and returned with a handgun. Two shots were fired in Fiedtkou’s direction, one of which hit him in the rear.

Police ranks were alerted about the incident and were prompt on the scene.

The gun-toting man made several attempts to escape but was apprehended by the large crowd. Police were also able to retrieve the gun and the man was taken into custody.

Several others said that they were in their beds when they heard the gunfire.

They said that they chose to remain indoors since they did not know what was taking place. They said that they heard heavy tramping and what sounded like scuffling.

The two in police custody were said to be a part of a gang that constantly haunts the residents of the Christianburg area.

Another man believed to be a member of the gang, Clive Baird, 22 years, received a nine-month sentence when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing a cell phone valued $40,000 from Neilson Thompson. When sentence was passed Baird held on to the bars and burst into tears begging for mercy as he was celebrating his birthday the same day.
