Lower stockfeed price to cut cost of meat

– Consumers Association says

The Guyana Consumers Association said it has received a number of complaints that the high price of local meat and meat products are owing to the high prices demanded for stockfeed.

In a press release the association said it understands that Guyana Stockfields Limited controls about 80% of the market and is the main determinant of prices. Therefore it urges the company and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce to immediately review the question of lowering the price of stockfeed in order to have cheaper meat products on the market.

“If the prices of local stockfeeds cannot be substantially reduced, then we would recommend that importers be encouraged to source and import cheaper supplies,” it said, adding that other prospective producers should be given financial concessions to establish a more competitive market. However, the association said it hoped Stockfeeds Limited and the ministry can host productive talks on the issue.
