Sherod Duncan, a first-year Diploma in Communication student was elected president of the UG Student Society after three days of elections. He, along with the faculty representatives took the oath of office administered by Vice- Chancellor Lawrence Carrington.
In his charge to the newly-elected representatives, Carrington said he trusts they will take their posts seriously, consult with their colleagues and work together to change the status quo. He also urged them to evaluate the student body’s constitution, saying it is a good time to do this since the university is also doing the same. He wished them well in their term in office.
The newly-elected UGSS president thanked God and all those who voted for him. Acknowledging the charge delivered by the vice-chancellor, he said that recognising that there is a problem is only part of the solution. Duncan stated that if the students of the university put their hands to the plough then together they can achieve the impossible.
The beaming leader who contested the elections as head of the group, the ‘Revolutionaries’ said that among the many objectives he hopes to accomplish during his tenure is the transformation of the George Walcott Lecture Theatre (GWLT) into a more modern facility. He said that he hopes to modernise the building ensuring that there are better aids to assist in teaching, and he would like to see the building air conditioned as well. Admitting that this is an ambitious goal, he said he believes that modernising the building will benefit many students since it is one of the biggest lecture theatres and its current condition is not pleasing.
Elections for the head and executive body of the UGSS were held on November 4 to 7 at the Turkeyen Campus and on November 6 at the Tain Campus in Port Mourant, Berbice.
