Lucrative Digicel golf tourney set for this week-end

The stage is set for two days of intense golf when Guyana’s leading mobile telecommunications provider Digicel’s   two-day Medal Play Golf Classic tournament takes place at the Lusignan Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament is being regarded as a dress rehearsal for the Guyana Open championships set for for next weekend and close to 50 golfers, including several overseas-based players who are already here for the Guyana Open, will take part this week-end.

Jerome Khan, Captain of the Lusignan Golf Club, yesterday disclosed that the golfers and the general public can expect an exciting two days of competition.
Among the overseas-based golfers lined up to compete are Jaipaul, a former Guyana Open champion, David and Brijlall Harry and Rajiv Misir.

They will be up against stiff local competition led by teenage sensation Joaan Deo who won last week-end’s MACORP tournament and the most recent Courts Guyana Inc. sponsored two-day event.

The other players who will be vying for top honours include Avinash Persaud, Christine Sukhram, Dinanauth Mohanlall, Imran Khan,  Ian Gouveia, Patrick Prashad, Esau Shamshudin, Albert Russell, Geert  Heikens, Lester Alvis, Chatterpaul Deo, Mike Mangal, Lester Alvis, Melissa Humphrey, Brian Gladford, Jerome Khan, Maurice Solomon, Brian Hackett, Munaff Arjune, Christine Sukhram, Robert Hanoman, Mike Guyadin, Francois Montour,  Bruce Cummings, Roy Cummings, Andre Cummings, William Walker, Mel Sankies, Kasim Khan, Bolaram Deo, Dr. Ram Singh, Mark Lashley, Alfred  Mentore, Carlos Adams and Albert Semple.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three players with the best net scores over the two days and the best ladies player. There will also be prizes on both days for the best net, lowest gross and Nearest to the Pin.

Meanwhile, Digicel presented a cheque for over $1/2 million to officials of the Lusignan Golf Club for the staging of the tournament.
Digicel Marketing Director Donovan Whyte presented the cheque to Lusignan Golf Club President Mel Sankies at the Company’s head office in Kingston yesterday. Whyte said the cheque represented the company’s commitment to helping in the development of the sport in locally.

“If you visit the golf club you will see permanent branding because we believe the sport has potential so we are helping in its development,” Whyte noted.
Sankies thanked the company for sponsoring the tournament and assisting in the development of the Club.

Also present at the presentation ceremony were Digicel Director of Sales and Distribution Nalini Vieira, Business Development Manager Gavin Hope, Sponsorship manager Shirwin Campbell and Jerome Khan and Troy Peters, Club Captain and PRO respectively of the LGC.
