Dominica assumes Caricom chairmanship

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt assumed the Chairmanship of the Caribbean Community on January 1, 2010 and is expected to serve in this position until June 30.

In a press release the Caricom Secretariat said President Bharrat Jagdeo served in the position from July until December 2009. The chairmanship rotates among member states every six months.  Haiti will assume chairmanship from July 1 to December 31, 2010.

Caricom said the change in chairmanship also affects the Bureau of the Conference of Heads of Government which comprises the current chairman Skerritt, the outgoing and incoming chairmen Jagdeo and Haitian President Rene Preval and Secretary-General Edwin Carrington.

The bureau initiates proposals for development and approval by the ministerial councils; updates the consensus of the member states on issues to be determined by the conference; facilitates implementation of community decisions and guides the secretariat on policy issues.
