Politicians should suppress ego in the interest of the ‘other selves’

Webster’s dictionary defines ego as the ‘I’ or self of any person; a thinking, feeling, and conscious being, able to distinguish itself from other selves.

I dare suggest that the main stumbling block to Dr Henry B Jeffrey’s “total and united opposition mobilization” (SN, January 9) is the super abundance in our midst of some of the most formidable egos in existence on this planet. For Guyana to move forward the notion of self must be replaced by the notion of the collective – the commonweal.

I have become extremely weary of politicians who glibly articulate that in their thinking country comes first, while in their hearts it is self that dominates each and every action, and their deepest consciousness.

Sadly, for the most part, our politicians are self-serving. If they, by some divine intervention, were able to think purely in terms of what’s best for Guyana and for the other selves, there would by now be the total and united opposition Dr Jeffrey wrote about.

Such self-sacrifice, however, demands a diminishing, better still, total subjugation of the dreaded ego. Our political leaders and politicians must now learn how to suppress ego and self in complete service of the other selves. I have faith that they will.

Yours faithfully,
F Hamley Case
