Man remanded over home invasion, crankshaft theft

Harris pleaded guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him but after listening to his version of the incident she entered a not guilty plea for him.

It is alleged that on January 9, he broke and entered the home of Ron Griffith and stole a car’s crankshaft valued $70,000.

Harris in his explanation to the court stated that he was walking along a road in East La Penitence when he noticed a car bumper along with other parts attached to it on a parapet. He stated “ah start titivating with it foh get off two parts cause ah couldn’t lift de whole thing and tek it away.”

He said that he suddenly felt a lash to his back and when he turned around to see who it was “it was a man wid a big wood that come foh beat me.”

Harris noted that although he intended to steal some of the car parts he never got the opportunity to since he was taken up blocking the lashes with his hands. He also stated that he never broke into Griffith’s home. However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that Harris was found in Griffith’s home some time after 3 that morning.

He said that Griffith apprehended him and later called the police and handed him over to them.

Harris is expected to make another court appearance on February 3.
