Leopold Street couple accused of having cocaine in their bedroom

Devon Haywood, 29, and Deidre Simon, 30, were remanded to prison yesterday after they both pleaded not guilty to having in their possession on Sunday at Leopold Street ten grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Representing the couple, attorney-at-law Sasha Roberts told the court that Haywood, a taxi driver, is Simon’s reputed husband and he lives at 66 Leopold Street, while Simon lives at 57 Cross and Leopold streets.

On the day in question, Roberts said, Haywood was visiting Simon to see his two minor children when police conducted a raid on the premises which is a tenement yard. The alleged substance was found in the building. Roberts told the court that neither of her clients are flight risks.

Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to bail on the grounds that no special reasons were given by Roberts, adding that the police raided the residence at 04:30 hrs and the cocaine was allegedly found in the bedroom occupied by both the defendants.

The couple is to return to Court Five on April 19 for trial.
