Minibus mows down woman, 84

An octogenarian was killed yesterday afternoon after she was struck down by a minibus in the vicinity of the Linden bus park.

Victorine Barron

The deceased is 84-year-old Victorine Barron of 47 Roxanne Burnham Gardens. She was hit by a route 42-minibus (Georgetown/ Timehri) with licence plate number BMM 2810, shortly after 3 pm yesterday.  The woman was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

Her son, Oswald Alleyne told Stabroek News last evening that according to reports, his mother was struck after the driver took the turn dangerously. He was unable to say exactly where the accident occurred but, according to him, his mother was attempting to cross a street in the vicinity of the Linden bus park when the bus hit her before dragging her a distance of about 30 feet.

Alleyne said he was told that when the driver eventually stopped, his mother’s head was under one of the wheels of the bus. He said the driver transported his mother to the hospital, where he dropped her off then left. The driver was, however, later taken into police custody, Alleyne said.

Alleyne, the only biological child of the deceased, described his mother as a strong-willed and independent woman. He said she would look after herself and her affairs.  He said his mother was active and healthy and would regularly travel on her own.

He said he last spoke to his mother on Wednesday.  He said he had promised to visit over the weekend to help her to fix up her kitchen.  He was last night lamenting the fact that he will now be unable to fulfil what he had promised.

Barron is survived by her husband Wilfred Barron, who is in his 90s, four grandchildren and several other relatives.
