Red Cross needs US$103M to help 300,000 Haitians for 3 years

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is now calling for US$103 million to assist some 300,000 people affected by the earthquake in Haiti for the next three years.

A release from the society said this new appeal replaces the 10 million Swiss francs appeal launched on January 13, and it maps out the response of the world’s largest humanitarian network.

It includes a scaled-up relief component and in the coming days and weeks, focus would be placed on trying to reduce the risk of waterborne and water-related diseases.

According to the IFRC this announcement comes even as vital relief arrives in the devastated city of Port-au-Prince. Last Friday two planes laden with 22 tonnes of aid arrived and on Saturday a convoy of aid supplies travelled from Dominican Republic to Haiti.

On the local front, the Guyana Red Cross Society continues to make appeals for emergency monetary donations to assist in the response effort in Haiti.

Donations can be made to the Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry (GBTI)  C1DA-814213, Bank of Nova Scotia  109778, Republic Bank of Guyana Ltd  276-304-3 and Demerara Bank 221-766.

Cheques and or monetary donations can also be taken to the Red Cross Kingston headquarters.
