FIFA pours money into Haiti relief efforts

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad,  CMC – Football’s world governing body, FIFA, has thrown US$250 000 behind relief efforts in Haiti while one of its vice-presidents Chung Moon-Jung has pledged another half-million US dollars of his personal money, as football mogul Jack Warner continues to lobby the fraternity for support.

The move comes after Warner, the CONCACAF president, last week donated US$100 000 of his personal funds to the ongoing relief efforts in disaster stricken Haiti.

Guyanese second and third in TTUTA 10-K

Guyanese athletes Kelvin Johnson and Lionel D’Andrade were second and third respectively in the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) 10-kilometre road race last weekend.

The event was won by Curtis Cox in 32 minutes, 18 seconds with Johnson 32:52s and D’Andrade 32:55s, rounding out the top three.
Marshall dropped from J/ca squad

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica’s selectors dropped out-of-form opening batsman Xavier Marshall Tuesday and replaced him with Danza Hyatt for their third-round WICB Regional first class match against Guyana this weekend in Barbados.

The 23-year-old Marshall among the most dominant batsmen in the trials last month has had scores of 2, 10, 13, and 0 in the first two rounds.

Berto pulls out of Mosley title fight

MIAMI, Florida, CMC – Distraught Haitian world boxing champion Andre Berto has pulled out his scheduled month-end title defence against American Shane Mosley following the catastrophic earthquake in his Caribbean country.

Florida-based Berto, holder of the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight title, announced in a press release Tuesday that he is “physically and emotionally unable to prepare” for his clash with Mosley and has withdrawn from the January 30 main bout in Las Vegas.

The entire card, which should have also featured Jamaican light heavyweight Glen Johnson against American Yusaf Mack, has been cancelled.

Nanthan returned as Windwards’ president

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC – Dominica’s Emmanuel Nanthan has been returned as president of the Windward Islands Cricket Board of Control (WICBC) for another two-year term.

At its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in St Lucia last week, the WICBC elected Nanthan unopposed for a second two-year term.

Elson Crick, of St Vincent and the Grenadines, was also returned to the position of vice president.

Crick and Nanthan will represent the WICBC as Directors on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Grenadian Cecil Greenidge is the alternate Director.
