Guyana Red Cross has collected $4.7M for Haiti so far

The Guyana Red Cross Society (GRCS) has to date collected some $4.7M to assist sister Caricom country Haiti which was recently ravaged by a magnitude 7 earthquake.

According to a release from the GRCS, the aforementioned sum was garnered through street collections, walk-in donations at its Eve Leary headquarters, collection boxes at business locations and through publicized bank account numbers.

The release stated that as donations continue to be made at its headquarters on a daily basis, persons wishing to donate can do so through the following GRCS bank accounts.

The release stated that cheques and donations can also be taken to the organization’s headquarters and persons in need of further information as regards donations can contact the GRCS on telephone numbers -226-0384 or 227-1108.

The release also noted that the Red Cross Red Crescent has established a 70-bed hospital in Port-au-Prince and that twelve emergency response units have arrived in Haiti and another seven are en route. “With 19 ERUs now having been engaged, this operation represents the largest ever deployment of these international emergency response teams in the history of the Red Cross Red Crescent.” It said that the provision of emergency health assistance remains a top priority and it has also established two basic health care emergency response units. Further, the Red Cross Red Crescent is producing and distributing 500,000 litres of water a day.
