Guyanese woman charged in Lara burglary

Curlis Anderson, 32, of Farouk Trace, El Socorro, appeared before Magistrate Brian Dabideen in the Fourth (A) Court charged with receiving the Sony Vaio computer some time between October 18 last year and February 9 this year. She was represented by Fareed Ali and was not called upon to plead, as the charge was laid indictably.

Ali told the court his client had been living in this country for the past six years and had only recently applied through the Ministry of National Security for permanent residence. He said Anderson did not have a criminal record here nor in Guyana, and asked that she be granted bail. She worked as a maid, he said.

Anderson, along with six other people, was arrested at her home on Tuesday morning, after officers executed a search warrant there. The officers reportedly found the laptop, a pair of batting pads and an autographed cricket bat belonging to Lara. The other six accused were still being held at the Central Police Station on St Vincent Street, Port of Spain.

Anderson was granted bail with a surety to be approved by a Clerk of the Peace in the sum of $15,000, and will reappear in court on February 23.

Earlier in the day, Lara’s former maid, Annmarie Marcano, reappeared before Dabideen in the Eleventh Court. She first appeared before the magistrate on Monday, charged with stealing one bottle of Angostura Master Blend Rum, nine Oakley sunglasses, valued at US$300 each, five tie pins with ‘400’ engraved on them, a silver Cartier pen with the words ‘688 runs, well done’ engraved on it, and a bottle of Taittinger Champagne from Lara’s Lady Chancellor home. Her matter was adjourned to April 27. She remains out on $60,000 bail.
