Teen prisoners escape from Den Amstel lock-ups

Two teenaged prisoners on remand for trafficking in narcotics and simple larceny escaped from the Den Amstel police station lock-ups on Tuesday.

The boys, 14 and 15 year-old, earlier appeared in court charged with the offences and were remanded into police custody. They were then taken to the Den Amstel lock-ups around 1:25 pm that day. A police source told this newspaper that ranks put the bolt in place but failed to lock it. The teens later pushed their hand through the grill, opened the door and scampered away.

A lone policewoman was on duty at the time and she was unaware of what had occurred until other prisoners informed her, the source said.

One of the teens is from Tuschen and the other is from the Parika area. A search is ongoing to recapture the boys.
