Police criticised for “sloppy work” after duo appear on firearm charges

The two charges allege that on March 9 Ron Gullet at Eye Lash Backdam, North West District had in his possession a 16-gauge shotgun along with five cartridges without licence. It is further alleged that on the same day at Eye Lash Backdam, Ken Allen was found with a 16-gauge shotgun with one 9mm live round without being the holder of a firearm licence.

The magistrate noted that in Allen’s case the ammunition and the gun simply did not match and sought clarification from the statement only to find that the docket sheet did not contain one.  She chided the police for what she termed “sloppy work” as there was no evidence to guide the court if a query arose.

The matter continues on March 15 when the police are expected to produce the written statement or have clearer information on the charges.
