Lawn tennis players finding it tough at World C/ships

Guyana Under-14 boys’ team lost 0-3 to El Salvador as play in the IBM/ITF World Junior Championships continued on Monday and Tuesday in Trinidad.

Jaime Molina defeated Daniel Lopes 6-1, 6-1,  Jose Armado Flores defeated Gavin Lewis 6-2, 6-0 and henry Lam and Jaime Molina defeated  Lopes and Khalif Gobin 6-1, 6-2.

The team was scheduled to play Honduras yesterday.

In the girls’ Under-14 category, the Guyana team grouped with Bermuda, Panama and Costa Rica lost to both countries by 0-3 margins.

Against Bermuda Eva Frazzoni defeated Aretta Dey 6-0, 6-3, Clementine Keys defeated Nicola Ramdyhan 6-0, 6-1 and Frazzoni and Tyler Smith defeated Dey/Ramdyhan 6-1, 6-0 in the doubles.

Against Costa Rica Ariana Rahmanparast defeated Dey 6-0, 6-0, Mariela Haug won from Ramdyhan 6-0, 6-0 and Haug and Rahmanparast defeated Dey/Ramdyhan 6-0, 6-1.

The girls’ team was down to play its final match yesterday.

The region’s finest young tennis players are competing for two places to participate in the finals in the Czech Republic in early August.
