Dwellers along the roadway along the roadway at Port Kaituma in Region One may be relocated to facilitate renovation works to be carried out.
According to a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), Transport and Hydraulics Minister Robeson Benn during a recent visit to the area, stated that the authorities are prepared to work with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) in the area in providing alternative facilities for the dwellers whose structures on the roadway and near to the ferry stelling have been affecting road development.
Benn stated that an old cassava mill facility as well as a bond not far from the ferry area could be utilised by the residents. According to GINA, the Public Works Ministry had earmarked the road, made of loam, for application of asphalt. However since the illegal structures occupy the roadway, work was never expedited.
A resident in the area stated that shacks along the roadway pose some difficulty for her to unload goods in a timely manner from the stelling, since, according to her, the limited space available usually results in traffic congestion.
Mining activities have made Port Kaituma a rapidly developing business area and as such development is needed to meet the needs of the community. There are no proper roads to facilitate the numerous vehicles such as minibuses, ATVs and trucks that traverse the area, GINA stated.
The authorities have carried out demolition campaigns successfully in Regions Three and Four, while such exercises are being carried out in Region Six, the release stated.
