At the close of play yesterday Demerara were 44-7 after 17 overs entering today’s final day. Demerara legspinner Amir Khan bagged 6-32 to send Essequibo crashing to 126 all out some 55 minutes after the tea interval. The top scorer for Essequibo was captain Herrel Greene with 28 while Vijay Surujpaul chipped in with 17.
Off-spinner Christopher Surat supported Khan with 2-3 while fast bowler Seon Daniels picked up one wicket.
When Demerara batted R Beaton captured 2-14 while A. Adams took the other wicket for four runs. The not out batsmen are Kwame Cross on 17 and Arif Abib on one.
The game, which started late due to the dampness of the pitch, saw Demerara winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Demerara Coach Garvin Nedd, a former national off-spinner, said he was satisfied with Khan’s performance but that the players did not back up the game plan. He stated that the team’s priority is to get some points. Essequibo Coach Vibert Johnson said that he would have been happier with a better performance but was satisfied with the pressure that the team was putting on Demerara. “If we could’ve gotten another wicket that would’ve been more comfortable for me,” Johnson said.
The game is expected to continue at 9:30am today.
Round two is expected to begin from April 11 in Anna Regina.
