Assistant Superintendent of Police Kennett Bernard, who is stationed at the Police Mounted Branch, Eve Leary, entered the guilty plea on Wednesday before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Persid Edmond, who imposed the penalty on him after reading the charge.
Bernard admitted that on April 3, at Thomas Lands, he drove a vehicle in a dangerous manner to the public, which resulted in an accident that caused persons to sustain injuries.
Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin London had stated that it could be clearly seen in this matter that the police showed no partiality in prosecuting a fellow policeman who had broken the law. Bernard told the court that he was indeed driving on the day of the accident and that he did take a few drinks but “nothing much.”
A police press release had stated that investigations revealed that Bernard, whose alcohol intake level was above what is legally acceptable for operating a motor vehicle, “was proceeding on the northern side of the road and had strayed over into the path of two oncoming vehicles,” resulting in the collision.
