Inquiry into death of mental patient begins

In the dock is another patient Jermaine Benjamin, who is accused of unlawfully killing Persaud, on May 2, 2009 at the National Psychiatric Hospital, in Berbice.

Benjamin was an inmate at the institution when he was alleged to have gone berserk, hitting several patients with a fire extinguisher, resulting in the hospitalisation of Harry Ramnarain, Gregory Mendonza, Errol De Younge, and Ramnarine Lallit, and the death of Persaud.

At the time of the incident, he reportedly told police that he came “to free the prisoners.”

Testifying at the hearing on Wednesday was Corporal Sunil Singh, who was cross-examined by Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford. The Inquiry will continue on April 13.
