Women who attacked each other to do community service

On March 26, housewife Vanessa Almond, 30, of 106, Block 22 Linden, assaulted Nicola McAlmont, 36 of 122, Block 22 Linden, so as to cause her actual bodily harm. Prosecutor Inspector Deneshwar Nauth told the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court that Almond had been charged with similar offences in the past. The court ordered Almond to serve her sentence at the Mackenzie Police Station lock-ups. She then made a cross charge against McAlmont, who was handed the same sentence. The women were ordered to serve their sentence two days per week for two months at the lock-ups.

Magistrate McLennan told the women that they should strive to set examples for their children and she thought that the sentence could help them to get along.

Meanwhile, Magistrate McLennan granted $10,000 bail to a man charged with assaulting his mother. Kevon Pile, 19, of 298 Bulletwood Street, Mackenzie, Linden pleaded not guilty to the charge. It was alleged that on Tuesday, at Block 22, Pile assaulted his mother Aliney Williams.

He was ordered to return to court on June 2.

Another man, Bernard Hodge, 40, who had been charged with assault in December 2009, was cleared of the indictment by the Magistrate.

Hodge, who had pleaded not guilty, and was granted $10,000 bail. The prosecution’s case was that on Saturday, December 26, at Bernard’s Variety Store on Republic Avenue, Mackenzie, Linden, Hodge assaulted Oniqua John.

However, Magistrate McLennan said that on examining the evidence, she found the prosecution’s case wanting, since there had been no independent witness in the matter. This left a margin of doubt and as such Hodge was found not guilty of the crime.
