Gamborie.com: Seeking to promote Guyana, connect Guyanese

Two enterprising Guyanese twenty-one year-old “disciples of information technology” have created a local website which, apart from marking their entry into the world of business seeks to create social links between and among patrons and to serve as a medium for the local, regional and international promotion of Guyanese goods and services. Quincy Baird and Terry Vieira – The Webmasters, as they call themselves – launched Gamborie.com on March 1 this year, less than three months after the creation of what their advertising brochure describes as “a multifunctional website” that allows for social intercourse among Guyanese the world over.  The Webmasters say that their site has worked perfectly since the testing period and the pace at which it has grown has served to encourage them.

What Gamborie.com seeks to do is to provide a range of options for persons interested in using the information superhighway to further their personal interests. Vieira says that users of the website will be able to create and disseminate personal profiles, upload music, photos and videos; create online social circles; occupy chat rooms; engage in discourses; participate in competitive on-line games and create and manage personal blogs.

In the period since its establishment Gamborie.com has attracted more than 462 Guyanese users from countries across the world. Predictably, the Webmasters have also attracted the attention of local musicians and other entertainers and promoters, keen to utilize the available cyberspace to promote their music and otherwise advertise their talents. Gamborie.com has also been charged with promoting the Guyana Model Search and Design Stylist Portfolio 2010 by providing information updates on this event.

Both Baird and Vieira are self-taught students of Information Technology.  “Basically, we used other websites to learn about how to set up our own,” Vieira told Stabroek Business.

While Gamborie.com is seeking to expand the base of its business by providing a broader range of services, The Webmasters say that they are determined to continue to function within the realm of decency. “We monitor the system constantly to ensure that there is no uploading of nude photographs or other obscene content,” Vieira says. “Use of indecent language is against our code and members who do not comply with our code of practice and with the policies of Gamborie.com can be suspended from our chat room or from the entire website,” Vieira says.

Gamboree.com seeks to build a reputation as much more than a juvenile playground. Vieira says that The Webmasters are seeking to establish a reputation that will attract significant advertising patronage from the local and international business community. The website’s market, he adds, seeks to go far beyond entertainment and music, serving as a mechanism for the positive promotion of Guyana abroad. “Our goal is to connect and promote Guyana and Guyana online, wherever they may be and to help to show the world the beauty of Guyana. We also plan on promoting businesses and entertainment events so that persons residing outside of Guyana, including overseas-based Guyanese can come to an understanding of how we live in Guyana.”
