The essential significance of what was conveyed in the letter from Tacuma Ogunseye as appeared in the Stabroek News of Saturday, May 8 (In Guyana we are unwilling to discuss extra-parliamentary forms of struggle’) chills the conscience of every peace-loving Guyanese.
Note well Mr Ogunseye’s pride in referring to what he described as “armed African militants,” as was experienced in the country two years ago. Currently he asks about, nay promotes, extra-parliamentary forms of struggle.
Nothing is wrong with extra-parliamentary forms of protest, so long as they are practised within the provisions of the law. Armed struggle is something else, and I dare say it is to be expected that fire will be met with fire. However, what is the struggle to which Ogunseye refers?
There is no suppression existing in Guyana. Rather, there is a surfeit of freedom in this country. There is equal opportunity for all Guyanese. Just examine the make-up of the workers in every sphere of employment.
