Computer technician accused of converting ground provisions money

A computer technician who was reportedly entrusted with over $1.6M to purchase ground provisions appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday  charged with fraudulently converting the money to his own use.

Christopher Spencer, 31, of 9 Leonora Public Road, West Coast Demerara, denied the charge which stated that between March 8 and April 15, being entrusted with $1,697,085 by Alton Scott, being money to buy ground provisions for Darren Campbell, he converted same to his use and benefit.

He was represented by attorney Adrian Thompson who said that his client has an unblemished record.  He said that Campbell is a Trinidadian and had sent the money for someone who claimed that he gave the money to Spencer.  The attorney said that there is no record that the transaction ever took place and he queried what a computer technician knows about ground provisions.

The money was sent for Scott so that he might buy ground provisions to export to Trinidad.  Thompson said it was the word of Scott that he gave the money to Spencer since there is no evidence.  He asked for reasonable bail to be granted.
The prosecutor did not object to bail.

Spencer was then granted bail and the matter put down for July 8 for report.
