A computer technician was recently granted bail after he denied an accusation that he fraudulently misappropriated funds entrusted to him by attorney Gordon Gilhuys to buy and install CCTV cameras.

Rawle Welchman, 42, of Lot 306 Crane Housing Scheme, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Two on December 12th. He denied the charge that during the month of August, 2016, at Hadfield Street, being solely entrusted by Gilhuys with the sum of $290,000, to purchase and install CCTV cameras, he fraudulently misappropriated same to his own use of benefit.

According to his Lawyer, Welchman did buy and install the cameras with the money he was given but after three months they stopped working and Gilhuys demanded a new set of cameras, which Welchman subsequently ordered online. However, according to the lawyer, the shipping company reported to Welchman that the cameras never arrived, which resulted in Gilhuys reporting the matter to the police and Welchman being arrested. However, he was released but was told to report to the investigating rank, which he did but after a while stopped because every time he went to the police station, he did not find the rank.

Prosecutor Sanj Singh objected to bail on the claim that the defendant was a flight risk as he had failed to adhere to conditions that were attached to station bail.

Welchman, however, was granted bail in the sum of $75,000 and was told to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Monday at 9 am. The matter was adjourned until February 7th, 2020.
