Sea defence at Cullen being bolstered

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications is conducting sea defence maintenance works at Cullen, Essequibo Coast in anticipation of the May/June rains.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the Region Two area is said to be especially vulnerable to overtopping during the spring tides. The works are being done by the ministry’s Force Account Unit.

Acting Chief Sea and River Defence Officer Geoffrey Vaughn noted that the ministry sent an excavator to Essequibo while earth is being mobilised to the area so that works can be done expeditiously. He also said remedial works were done in the area and a temporary revetment was built to hold the earthen embankment.

GINA said the situation at Cullen is troublesome as persons reside along the foreshore which affects the ministry’s ability to conduct works. Vaughn noted that persons occupying the foreshore are flouting the Sea Defence Act and should be removed.
