Men intercepted by Berbice patrol on gun, ammo charges

Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop on Tuesday denied four men their pre-trial freedom when they appeared before him at the Albion court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Reports are that on May 20 the men, Gavin Gills, 22, of Auchlyne; Dirk Crandon, 29 of No. 1 Road, Fyrish; Jermaine Clifford, 28, called ‘Foo’

of Rennison Road and Nigel Henry, 21 of Williamsburg, all Corentyne villages, reportedly had in their possession an unlicensed .38 Taurus revolver along with six rounds of 9 mm ammo and two toque masks.

At the time, Gills was driving the vehicle which has since been detained by police. The defendants, who were charged along with another man, David Andrews, 36, of 155 Williamsburg were not required to plead to the indictable offences.

Andrews was incarcerated at the Rose Hall Police Outpost but escaped on Saturday evening.  The rank who was on duty at the time has since been placed under close arrest.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Fazil Karimbaksh told the court that the men were travelling in a motorcar HB 7759 when a mobile patrol stopped them around 6:15 pm and carried out a search and found the articles.

Police have reportedly linked the weapon to a number of robberies committed on the Corentyne and are conducting further investigations.

However, none of the robbery victims has come forward so far to identify the men.
