Attack was result of culture of intolerance

Dear Editor,
The gross assault on Mr Frederick Kissoon on the night of May 24, 2010 is directly a result of a culture of intolerance cultivated by the ruling party.  Logic excludes any other political force and this gross attack is openly political and intended to be understood as an expression of power. It is also evident that he had to be trailed for the act to be committed.

In this country we have had conflicts between European executives, notorious for their historical contempt of those considered lesser breeds, and of all native communities. Yet no example of such a descent into the pit for a warning or a response can be easily recalled. In some ways, it is the lowest form of indignity, flying in the face of all the rhetoric of humanity and respect of equality.

Moreover the insult as delivered can involve injurious intentions and be calculated to cause bodily harm.  We deplore also the fervour that could conceive this unusual form of contempt.

It means that Mr Kissoon’s work in publicly and fearlessly criticising and exposing office holders is subject to sanction of humiliation and open violence.

We stand in solidarity with Frederick Kissoon.

Yours faithfully,
