Workers from the City Council were working feverishly yesterday to clear the Meadow Bank canal so as to reduce the flooding which has affected residents since last week.
When Stabroek News visited the area yesterday, a hymac was being used to desilt the canal. Several workers were seen trying to lay pipes to allow the water to run off. Residents had complained about the flooding in the area which posed a health hazard.
On Tuesday, Minister of Local Government Kellawan Lall had ordered that all fishing boats in the area be removed so that drainage works could have been carried out.
The presence of the boats at the canal’s koker was preventing access to facilitate its repair and cleaning. Further on Wednesday, officers from the City Constabulary had broken down several stalls which were located on the dam of the Canal. They were expected to return yesterday to continue their demolition exercise, however up to the time of this newspaper’s visit, no one had gone there.
As such, the remaining stallholders hoped that their stalls would be spared. It was opined by some stallholders that the fish stalls were removed since their presence was blocking the hymac’s access to the canal thereby hindering maintenance works.
