Ministry says initial probe points to suicide at Amerindian Hostel

The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs says that its initial probe into the recent death of a woman at the Amerindian Hostel on Princes Street, Georgetown, indicates a case of suicide.

The ministry in a press release on Friday stated that

“it is alleged that on May 31 the now deceased (Evelyn) Daniels was found inflicting fatal wounds to herself at the Amerindian Hostel.”

Staff of the Amerindian Hostel immediately rushed the patient  to the Georgetown Public Hospital and the matter was also reported to the police.

According to the release, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs “promptly responded to the emergency call of the Administrator of the facility by dispatching a team consisting of the Permanent Secretary and two project officers. Internal findings by the team indicated suicide. However the ministry awaits the findings of the police investigation.”

Meanwhile, the ministry said it had to “clarify the circumstances and  misguided report” by  Kaieteur News in its story of June 2, 2010, headlined ‘Suspected murder rocks Amerindian Hostel  occupants’ surrounding the death  of Daniels.

The ministry said further that it was “reprehensible and unforgivable”  for Kaieteur News “to seek to paint a picture of suspected murder and to imply  that patients and staff of the residential facility may have had something to do with the death” without inquiring from the police about the findings of their investigations on the matter.

The  ministry also expressed regrets at the tragic loss of life and noted that it will assist in the burial arrangements.
