On June 4, between 13:30 hrs and14:00 hrs Kaveena and her family members were cleaning their rice field near their Adventure, Essequibo home to “throw rice” the following day, when the mishap occurred.

According to the police, the other members of the family had left the child in the field and gone onto the dam and she subsequently disappeared in the muddy swampy rice field.

Gooby, an older sister, was left in the field with the ten-year-old Suddie Primary School pupil and she joined the others on the dam after Kaveena assured her that she would be out soon.

Some ten minutes later, she realized her sister was not on the dam and inquired of her mother, Nandranie Ramnauth, who immediately raised an alarm after she noticed “Baby slippers on de dam” and no one had recalled seeing her leave the field.

She drew villagers’ attention and they immediately all launched a search for Kaveena.

After several minutes of searching her body was found by a village boy and she was presumed dead by onlookers.

The Suddie Police Station was alerted and officers arrived within half an hour at the scene. They examined the area and took statements from her parents and others who were there.

Kaveena was then taken to the Suddie Public hospital where a doctor examined her body.

It was revealed yesterday that Kaveena had been an excellent academic performer at Suddie Primary. Her parents, siblings and loved ones are still grieving her death since she was an obedient, benevolent child and the baby of the family.
