Mahaica Creek labourer dies after being pinned by tractor

A Mahaica Creek labourer died on Saturday morning after a tractor toppled and pinned him while he was ploughing a rice field.

The dead man has been identified as Abdool Sheriff Hussain, 46, of Little Biaboo, Mahaica Creek, East Coast Demerara.

Police yesterday said that Hussain was assisting his friend in ploughing the rice field at Handsome Tree, Mahaica Creek.

At approximately 09.30 hrs, while they were ploughing the rice field, the friend told police he saw Hussain’s tractor turn over. At the time, he was about twenty feet away from the now deceased man.

He immediately drove and went to Hussain’s aid and he observed him pinned under the tractor. He tried to rescue him but was unable to do so.

The friend, police said, eventually left the rice field and went for help and returned five minutes later with public-spirited citizens. They managed to turn over the tractor and free Hussain from under the tractor. They took him to a dam in a motionless state and tried to revive him but their efforts were in vain.

The police were summoned to the scene and the body was examined for signs of violence but none were seen.

The body was escorted to Mahaicony Public Hospital where Hussain was officially declared dead.

Hussain’s body was then taken to Bailey’s Funeral Parlour where it awaits an autopsy.
