Consumer Affairs body recognises outstanding businesses, rights activist

The Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC) on Friday evening awarded five outstanding businesses and a consumer rights advocate for compliance with the Consumer Affairs Act at its Inaugural Compliance Award Ceremony.

The awardees were selected from 20 applicants across various business and consumer advocate categories.

In a statement, the CCAC said the specific awards focused on warranties, refund and return policies, issuing necessary receipts, continuous advocacy for consumer rights, and overall compliance with all aspects of the Consumer Affairs Act.

Each business was individually inspected for compliance with the Consumer Affairs Act and registration with the GRA, NIS, and the commercial registry.

During his address to those gathered, John Edghill, Director of Business at the Ministry of Tourism Industry and Commerce, said that compliance across all sectors is essential and that the onus to provide quality service is on businesses.

Also, giving remarks at the event was Vice Chairman of the Private Sector Commission Ryan Alexander, who encouraged all businesses to strive for compliance and commended the Commission for the initiative to certify businesses and recognise the outstanding ones.

The CCAC said the compliance award programme will be an annual feature and include media awards for both print and electronic media commencing in 2023.

Telco Solutions won the Most Compliant (Electronics) Award; Caribbean Motor Spares won the Most Compliant (Auto Industry) Award; John Lewis Styles won the Best Consumer Experience Award; Silvies Industrial Supplies won the Most Compliant (Other Industries) Award; and Massy Distribution Guyana Inc won the Best Warranty Policy Award. In addition, longtime consumer rights advocate Pat Dial won the Consumer Rights Advocate of the Year Award.
