Police last night said they have arrested a Route 44 minibus driver hours after he assaulted traffic ranks performing duties on the Montrose, East Coast Demerara Public Road.

The civilian, who police named as Okemi Omali Harry, 30, of Middle Street, Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, was stopped for speeding.

In a brief statement, the police said Lance Corporal Singh and Woman Constable 25416 Doris stopped Harry, who was at the time the driver of minibus BAC 2287. He was told of the offence committed and asked to produce his driver’s licence.

Police stated that while Lance Corporal Singh was in the process of writing the driver a ticket, the driver made attempts to take away his licence from Corporal Singh, who resisted him. The driver then started to assault the rank.

A video of the incident was shared on social media and it showed that Harry was engaged in a scuffle with Singh and Doris attempted to part them but she was pushed aside. In one part of the video, the bus driver was seen grabbing the lawman by his neck as he attempted to recover his licence.

The commotion evolved into a fist fight between the two as they both traded punches. The driver at one point put the policeman in a “vice grip” and tripped him to the ground.

A mobile patrol responded and the driver was subsequently arrested and placed into custody pending charges.
