Remains of sickly ex policeman found at Agricola

The decomposing remains of a sickly man were yesterday discovered in a canal along the Flour Mill Road, Agricola, East Bank Demerara and relatives believe that he committed suicide.

Dead is ex policeman Stanford Holligan called ‘Tommy’ and ‘Police’ age 69 and a resident of First Street, Agricola. Relatives have positively identified the remains as that of Holligan.

Police said that the body was found around 11:30 am and a post-mortem examination will be conducted shortly.

At the scene many gathered to get a glimpse of the body which was clad in stripe pants and shirt.

One woman after one glance said that she knew the man and identified him as Holligan.

The man’s sister Cheryl Barker later told Stabroek News that on Saturday the man’s son informed her that he was missing. She said that she subsequently made checks at the Georgetown Hospital and the mortuary but came up empty handed.

She informed this newspaper that Holligan was suffering from several problems that he could not deal with.

Barker added that earlier this month, he attempted suicide by hanging.

Holligan would have celebrated his 70th birthday next Wednesday.

The body was discovered by a group of fishermen. One of them Roy Boston said that they were coming in from the Demerara River to the koker when they noticed the body stuck in bushes.

Security personnel at the nearby NAMILCO Company were notified and the police were called.

Ranks at the scene said that there were no visible marks of violence on the body.
