Are candidates aware of the high demands of the presidency?

Dear Editor,

My favourite President is Obama so I was peeved when some adverse comments were levelled at him with regard to his playing golf during the BP oil crisis. What do the media expect as he tries to get rid of stress? Now if that were not enough we have the highest US military leader in Afghanistan making some unsavoury remarks about the White House, including both Obama and his Vice-Pre-sident. General McChrystal apologized but he has been summoned to a meeting at the White House where he is likely to be further censured.

On the local scene there is a rush for presidential candidates for both parties in the upcoming elections, but are those candidates aware of the high demands of the job? The media and others want the cupboard to be laid bare prior to office and want a duplicate key whilst in office. It’s a stressful job and sometimes thankless – Presidents Cheddi and Forbes died on the job whilst

opposition leader Hoyte also died, Corbin had to go overseas for treatment and Sharma had a heart intervention operation. Our President has lost his hair keeping a tight budget, etc, but some of the hopefuls have anticipated that and are going bald.

I said that when items were banned many years ago laughter was on the list, and it’s only Godfrey Chin’s memoirs and the National Cultural Centre which give an outlet to relieve stress, as we have no local sitcom on TV. ‘Tek half and lef half.’

Yours faithfully,
