Man shot dead at market by city constable

A man was shot dead by a city constabulary rank at Bourda Market last night. The dead man has only been identified as ‘Abdul.’

The incident occurred before 9pm and an eyewitness, who did not want to be named, told Stabroek News that Abdul had sat close to him at the eastern section of Bourda Market to drink a cup of soup. According to the man, Abdul had collected the soup minutes earlier from persons who normally shared food there.

He said that Adbul was drinking his soup when three persons came up and one told Adbul “don’t run.” Stabroek News had been told that it was a city constabulary rank who shot Abdul but the man would not say who it was and would only say it was “security.” He said Abdul got up and was about to run and it was at this point that he was shot. “He just get up and was trying to move off.” The crushed soup cup and splatters of blood were still there when this newspaper visited. The area where the incident occurred is dark and the man said he did not see who shot Abdul but heard the gunshot.

The eyewitness said two of the men were “security” while the third man was someone with whom Abdul earlier had an argument. After the shooting, they wanted to take Abdul to the station but when a vehicle arrived, Abdul was taken to the hospital, the man said. He said that Abdul and the third man had an argument earlier in the evening. He could not say what the argument was about.

Sources at the Georgetown Public Hospital said that Abdul was shot in the right shoulder. He was pronounced dead on arrival and had been transported  there by city constabulary ranks.

The eyewitness said he saw Abdul around the Bourda market at times but did not know of any relatives or where he lived. “I just know him by seeing,” he said adding that he saw him earlier in the day.

He said that he learnt that Abdul had died when a policewoman came to interview him.
