Murdered cop had claimed harassment by senior who killed him

Constable Kelvin Shepherd had complained of being constantly harassed by the senior officer who killed him on Sunday and was planning to move out of the barracks at the Springlands Police Station.

Many including relatives are still baffled as to the reason behind Assistant Superintendent Ivelaw Murray’s decision to shoot Shepherd in the head before going home and turning his service revolver on himself.

Shepherd’s mother, Patricia told Stabroek News yesterday that following the death of her son, she was informed that Murray was in the habit of “pressuring he” but said her son had not confided in her about this.

The grieving woman said that this information came from a close friend of her son, who is also a policeman. Patricia said the friend told her about the senior officer’s behaviour and that they (he and Shepherd) had been looking for a place to rent.

The woman said that today she will be travelling to Georgetown to meet senior members of the force including Commissioner of Police Henry Greene.

“The person who did it done kill he self. I can’t tek justice on no one in this matter,” Patricia said sadly.

Post-mortem examinations on both bodies are scheduled for today.

The police had said in a press release that they are investigating a suspected murder/suicide involving Murray and Constable 20631 Shepherd.

Initial investigations have revealed that at about 00:55 hrs on Sunday, Assistant Superintendent Murray, who was in charge of the Station, shot Shepherd to his head with a force service .38 revolver in the barrack room at the Springlands Police Station under so far unclear circumstances.

The release added that during investigations into the murder, the body of Murray was later found in his home at Hashim Street, Springlands, around 03:25 hrs, with a suspected gunshot wound below the chin. The firearm was recovered next to the body. There are reports that the two had an argument minutes before the incident occurred.

Earlier, a group of policemen was heading to Number 48 Village in a vehicle driven by Murray when it struck a cow and was badly damaged. The vehicle had to be towed back to the station. The ranks were on their way to attend the wake for police constable Vickram Singh who was gunned down in Georgetown last Friday night.
