Private sector trucks to help city’s garbage collection

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) have sourced five trucks and drivers to aid the City Council’s efforts at garbage collection in the capital.

In a press release, the M&CC yesterday said the PSC and the GCCI sourced the trucks and drivers from the Guyana Scrap Metal Dealers Association and the volunteer collection started last Saturday.

Additionally, the ministries of Local Government and Public Works are assisting with needed equipment to complement the work being done by the Council.

On June 21, private contractors stopped collecting garbage after the council was unable to pay its debt of $75M.

As of May, some $63M was owed the contractors who remain on strike.

Collection of household garbage is currently being done on a fortnightly basis while areas that had twice a week collection will be afforded a weekly collection.

The M&CC stated that it “still continues to face financial difficulties but is making every effort to arrive at a solution with the collecting contractors and to examine its financial situation to determine whether schedules may have to be reviewed.”
It is hoped that the added equipment and manpower will bring “some relief to residents and businesses and to improve the aesthetics of the City.”
