Clyde Brown, called ‘Baby,’ was yesterday charged with last week’s murder of Karia Karia businessman John Paul.
Brown, who was arraigned on the capital charge at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, was not required to plead when it was read to him by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
It was alleged that on August 11 at Karia Karia, Essequibo Coast, Brown murdered Paul. Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford made a submission that the accused be remanded to prison and that the case be transferred to the Wakenaam Magistrates’ Court. Brown was later ordered to return to court on October 13.
Paul, 63, who operated a snackette and sold fuel to boat operators in the area, was shot and killed during a robbery last Wednesday night.
Police had said that three men carried out the attack. The men approached Paul under the pretext of purchasing fuel and it was under this cover that they held-up the businessman at gunpoint. A scuffle ensued and Paul was shot to his abdomen. He was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The men also held up Paul’s reputed wife, Sahodra Persaud, 61, and then ransacked the home and took away $195,000 cash and a STIHL chainsaw before escaping in a boat.
