AFC calls for restoration of independent Media Monitoring Unit

The Alliance For Change (AFC) is  calling on the Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB), the donor community and GECOM to move with haste to re-establish an independent Media Monitoring Unit.

The party said in a press release yesterday that this call is being made in view of “heightened evidence of misinformation appearing in the print and electronic media with a political bias.”

The AFC said further that another area of concern are the threats and acts of intimidation  which are being peddled  by political forces believed to be associated with the government, particularly in indigenous  villages in the hinterland.

The AFC said it is of the view that it is during this pre-election period, prior to the announcement of a date for National Elections, that the political mischief is conducted away from prying eyes rather than only during the campaign period when the media monitoring observers are active.

“It is for this reason that we make this call at this time,” the release concluded.
