I have got to acknowledge the local participating teams and overseas contingent for their brilliant, colourful and uniformed images that were showcased during the march-past of the just concluded 56th Police Athletics Meeting.
In my opinion B Division (Berbice) were second to none and deserved the trophy and monetary award hands down.
However, the Tactical Service Unit was adjudged the winner. The Commissioner of Police even announced his opinion to the effect that his views might also be different, and many had a laugh.
On the other hand, the meeting lived up to expectations during the time I managed to attend. The government representative who was the keynote speaker did a good job, and I hope that he will do everything in his power to see that his government fulfils its promise of an advanced/high tech track and field stadium.
Apparently, the situation up in Linden last weekend wasn’t such a colourful one at the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic. A report dated September 1 in the GTimes related an embarrassing and demoralising story about a national athlete and a prize involving prominent figures of the athletic fraternity. Situations seem to be getting worse. When we fail with our message of discipline and respect to the sports ambassadors, a lot of damage could be done to everyone. Folks should get their acts together.
