Foulis businessman shot, robbed of millions

Gunmen barged into the home of a Foulis businessman last night, battered him, shot him once and then escaped in his car with about $4M in cash and jewellery.

Puran of 20th Street Foulis, East Coast Demerara was shot once to the abdomen and has since been admitted to a private city hospital. The man, relatives said, was in a critical condition.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that some time after 7 pm three men barged into Puran’s home and launched their attack. As they demanded valuables from the businessman, reports said, one of the attackers gun-butted Puran to the head.

During the attack Puran was shot once. The string of events leading up to the man’s wounding is unclear. However, after Puran was wounded and the men had about $2M in cash and about the same amount in jewellery they escaped in his motor car which was parked in front the Foulis house.

The men subsequently abandoned the vehicle several villages away somewhere around the Coldingen area (closer to Georgetown). The vehicle was discovered by police.

Puran was immediately rushed to the city hospital for medical attention. When Stabroek News visited the institution last night relatives there said that the man’s wife had left with police to provide information. They said that the man was in a critical condition but declined to comment further.

The man, this newspaper further understands, operates a lumber yard in Enmore.

At press time last night Puran was still in theatre undergoing emergency surgery. Police had yet to issue a statement on the matter and several efforts made to contact relevant officials were futile.
