Man who says he used cocaine as painkiller fined and jailed

A man accused of having one gramme of cocaine in his possession was yesterday fined and also sentenced to three years imprisonment when he appeared before new acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that on September 2 at Georgetown, Leonard Hussain had in his possession one gramme of cocaine.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics when it was read to him.
When given a chance to respond, he told the court that he uses the cocaine for medicinal purposes. He went on to say that he recently underwent surgery on his abdomen and would use the illegal substance as a painkiller since it is extremely effective.

“I does use the coke fuh kill the pain my worship,” Hussain said.
The accused then raised his shirt and showed the magistrate a stitched wound on his abdomen.
The unrepresented Hussain was later fined $10,000 together with three years imprisonment.
