An Essequibo Coast man was on Monday fined and ordered to perform community service after he admitted to having a small quantity of cocaine in his possession.

According to the Guy-ana Police Force, Magis-trate Crystal Lambert handed the sentence to Rajveer Bisram, a 33-year-old Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast resident, who appeared at the Cha-rity Magistrate’s Court.

Bisram was charged with the possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

He admitted that he had a gramme of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. After pleading guilty, Bisram was fined $30,000 and ordered to perform 180 hours of community service, or serve three years in jail should he fail to pay the fine and do community service.

The police did not say whether special reasons were given for Bisram not being sentenced to the mandatory minimum of three years.
