The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has reinstated four unionized workers who were sacked following a fire at the Skeldon factory bagasse plant last month.
Reports are that ongoing engagements between the Guyana Agricultural Worker’s Union (GAWU) and the corporation have resulted in the corporation reconsidering its decision to dismiss the workers.
The sugar corporation was initially holding firm on its decision saying it was justified following the blaze which damaged a conveyor belt at the Skeldon factory.
The disciplinary action the corporation took against the workers triggered industrial action, but workers resumed work two days later hoping for a swift resolution.
The corporation took disciplinary action against nine employees following an investigation into the fire that resulted in extensive damage to the conveyor belt and according to Chief Executive Officer Paul Bhim the incident will cost the industry between $20 million and $25 million in repairs.
Herman Kissoon, a fire attendant at the factory and one of the unionized staff, had accused the corporation of dismissing him without a fair hearing.
