Gunmen struck in two separate parts of the city on Friday and escaped with more than $600,000 in cash.
The first incident occurred at Fort Street, Kingston, where businesswoman Dhanmattie Jaikarran, 60, was robbed. Police in a statement said that three men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, went to the woman’s shop on the pretence of transacting business. The bandit with the gun went behind the counter and held up the woman and was joined by his accomplices. The trio fled the area with $200,000 in cash.
Police also reported that two robbers, one of whom had a handgun, held up a sales truck around 2.15pm at Barr Street, Kitty.
Driver Shazad Sultan, 33, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, salesman Glenroy Adams, 25, of Werk-en-Rust and porter Mark Welch, 17, of Walker Terrace, were delivering supplies to a business entity in the area, when the robbery occurred. The three men heard a knocking sound emanating from the cabin of the truck, where the money was secured in a canister. Upon checking they were confronted by one of the suspects, who pointed the gun at them. The robbers then took $422,004 and escaped in a waiting taxi.
